Simple Harmonic Motion is a side project for Curtis E Johnson and longtime collaborator and multi-instrumentalist, jb.
Together they have taken a classical music format, the tone poem, and used it to present an interpretation of selected poems of Keats. Starting with Endymion - A thing of beauty is a joy for ever – they have chosen four other well-known poems for what is a unique and unusual take on the genre.
Those familiar with Curtis’s output over the years will know that he has for some time been interested in the harmonic textures of distortion and feedback, often as an overlay in more traditional arrangements for his songs. The tone poems provide an opportunity to bring his special guitar treatments to centre stage; beautifully performed and arranged, this music is an aural delight.
The music is entirely instrumental, and is set in the new age/ contemporary classical genre. It draws on a variety of influences but will appeal to devotees of Christian Fennesz, Pablo Bolivar, Rauelsson et al.
SHM will be performing Tone Poems live with a little help from their friends at selective venues in Northampton and London early in the New Year.
